Ngày 08-3-1949, Tổng thống Pháp là Vincent Auriol và Cựu hoàng Bảo Đại đã ký Hiệp ước Elysée, thành lập chính thể Quốc gia Việt Nam trong khối Liên hiệp Pháp do Bảo Đại làm Quốc trưởng. Từ ngày 06-6-1951 đến ngày 15-6-1954, Quốc gia Việt Nam đã phát hành 14 bộ tem với 26 mẫu tem. Tem bưu chính Quốc gia Việt Nam còn được gọi là dòng tem Bảo Đại, lưu hành trong những vùng do Pháp tạm chiếm trên lãnh thổ Việt Nam. Dòng tem này chấm dứt lưu hành sau khi chính thể Việt Nam Cộng hòa ra đời năm 1955. Năm 1955, Ngô Đình Diệm đã phế truất Quốc trưởng Bảo Đại của chính thể Quốc gia Việt Nam và thành lập chính thể mới gọi là Việt Nam Cộng hòa. Từ ngày 06-6-1955 đến ngày 25-4-1975, Việt Nam Cộng hòa đã phát hành … bộ tem với … mẫu tem, lưu hành trong vùng do Chính quyền Sài Gòn kiểm soát tại miền Nam Việt Nam.
